Blog 5: 3D Modelling, Transition to Digital

This project is my first fully digital project; I dusted off the old drawing tablet which I never really liked because it didn’t have the pen to paper connection that a more traditional style of sketching has. Though I felt it was something I needed to at least try.

Our brief for this project was to make a computer peripheral in thy style of a chosen company. I chose ford mustang and headphones. I'm not that into cars but I do have an appreciation for older car design. This would Blend well with my love for both modern and vintage headphone design.

I felt the transition from traditional to digital was a smooth one though I felt my messy sketching style was a lot more visible in digital. Lines blend in together and the line weight feels too random. Though I feel with experience and a more proactive use of the digital tools will elevate the drawings. The use of digital allows me to throw down ideas fast and the ability to erase and duplicate any part I want allows for accurate sketching. I feel it allowed me to convey my ideas better and faster.

Though I feel digital shines when it comes to rendering. Whilst I could see the ideation sketches being 50/50 digital and traditional. I feel when it comes to conveying your rendered development, digital is perfect. The ability to trace your favourite sketches and use the layering function to create a visually aesthetic, functional and detailed drawing. The use of images and different brush styles elevates that by allowing obvious and real to life details, that I feel traditional fails at. You could spend hours on a drawing just to make one mistake. Which is something I cannot afford, especially on a deadline.

When it came to transitioning my sketches into blender, found it very easy and enjoyable. Since it was my first time using blender I felt it was a bit overbearing but I kept at it.

At some point blender kind of "clicked" in my head, every function started to make sense and with every iteration of the design I felt that I got better and better, being able to make a new design in half the time.

overall the experience was a great one. I'm glad I was able to get an Idea of how digital drawing blender into my Design process and blender itself became a very important tool for all of my project coming fromward. Any time i had problems visualising blender came in handy.
