Blog 1: Air Purifier, Learning the Design Process
This would be my all-time project; it’s an older one but the collection of sketching and prototyping made for a wonderful ideation and development process. This build-up of ideas and use of physical models allowed for a prototype that I would say is one of my best. The use of the skills I built up over the 1st year truly mended together into an enjoyable final year project. For me this was a showcase of what’s to come in the following years in collage and even past that.
The brief consisted of making an air purification product. The only conditions were to have 1+ areas that take in air and 1+ areas that shoots out purified air. The product had to be small and light weight enough to hold in in the hand, allowing for easy transportation.
For this project we were not making a prototype that was functional. The task was simply to make a visual design that looks grounded in reality. This allowed my mind to reign free and spark my imagination
We were tasked to create a mood board for our design where we got to explore our ideas and narrow down a certain theme that we would like to follow. This was eye opening as I always was someone that made things on a whim, never considering how impactful a solid mood board could build up your ideas. Especially with how simple the process of finding the images and just exploring Pinterest for hours slowly building up ideas.
Here I focused on a fluid natural form before dwelling into an architectural/ geometric form. Two opposite forms that allowed for a wider scope of ideas. In the end I chose the geometric form of soviet architecture as it hit close to home as my father is from Russia. The personal aspect allowed for me to pour in a lot of passion into both ideation and development of the design.
When it came to the drawings, I found that I really challenged myself. I always found it easy to draw more natural organic forms. But complex geometric forms are where I found myself struggling to provide a string visual representation. This made the experience way more fun and exciting. Constantly fixing mistakes, hyper focusing on one all the lines trying to keep them straight.
The prototypes on the other hand were easier. The studio really allowed me to go wild with all the tape and cardboard making for each prototype to be an overall enjoyable experience.
The result that you see is a combination of all my hard work over the 5-6 weeks of work. Each step made for a strong foundation and thought be an unparalleled amount on what it’s like to tackle something that you are not comfortable with. Overall, this project is wonderful to look back on and I look fondly at I feel it as it was my first step into the world of design and solidified my love for the design process.
