Blog 2: Typewriter, Going Forward with my Models

When it came to my physical prototypes, I found that it was always one of my strong suits. I found a lot of comfort in expressing my ideas though physical form. Though it was always through a medium of cardboard. The course allowed me to use foam for me for my prototypes which was something very new to me, but I never found myself exploring the different materials.

This project was different though. I needed something sturdier than cardboard. Something that held its form better. This allowed me to explore different materials allowing me to widen my scope when it comes to making physical 3D models.

This is where a plastic sheet came in that allowed just that. Its 2 layers reinforced by a cross section of the same material allowed for a similar experience to cardboard though making for a much tougher shell. The introduction of foam for the smaller pieces allowed me to create something that combined strong structural integrity with detailed, visually appealing and most importantly accurate to the existing product.

I chose to make a final prototype that would be a perfect showing of what I had in mind. This means this is my first physical model that I committed fully too. This can be seen in the use of a printed wood veneer for the shell to show what material is used, and the use for spray paint to show the different colours used throughout the piece. This level of commitment was a first to me as I never really had the ability and materials to achieve this level of detail.

Overall, this was very useful project for me as a designer as it allowed me to expand my experience in model making and allowed me to go all out and make something I am truly proud of.
